Hundreds of schools have closed and travel has been disrupted by heavy snowfall across of most of Yorkshire.

In Bradford 200 schools shut to all pupils, with over 100 closed in Leeds and Kirklees, 50 in Wakefield and North Yorkshire and 40 in South Yorkshire.

In North Yorkshire, some morning coronavirus vaccination sessions in Harrogate and Ripon were cancelled.

The Met Office issued an amber weather warning saying up to six inches (15cm) of snow could fall on high ground.

Forecasters said motorists were at risk of becoming stranded and rail and air cancellations were likely.

The Woodhead Pass and the A628 at Holme Moss in West Yorkshire have been closed, Kirklees Council said.

  • Anyone due to go to the Great Yorkshire Showground or Ripon Racecourse this morning to have their coronavirus vaccination will have their appointment rescheduled, the local NHS said.

    The NHS North Yorkshire Clinical Commissioning Group said afternoon appointments should go ahead as planned.

    Covid testing sites in Catterick and Thornton Le Dale have also been shut. North Yorkshire County Council said people with appointments would be contacted with alternative arrangements.

    In the Bingley area of West Yorkshire the bad weather has stopped Covid-19 home testing teams visiting people, Bradford Council said.

    The trial of a man accused of murdering Hull student Libby Squire has been held up after snow prevented some jurors reaching Sheffield Crown Court.

    Train operator Northern Rail said there was widespread disruption across its network.

    Trees on the line have stopped services between Halifax and Rochdale.

    The firm asked passengers not to travel on the Calder Valley line as "treacherous road conditions" were making it difficult to run replacement bus services.

    A lorry also jack-knifed on the M62 between Rochdale and Huddersfield, closing the westbound carriageway.

    South Yorkshire Police has advised people not to travel unless absolutely essential.

    First Bus said its services in Halifax were "currently suspended due to adverse weather conditions". It added that some other routes in West Yorkshire were operating on main roads only and advised passengers to allow extra time for their journeys.

    Arriva Buses said there were no services operating from its Dewsbury depot.

    'Absolutely horrendous'

    Chris Johnson, who runs a private gritting firm, said his teams had been at work since the early hours.

    He described the conditions on the roads as "absolutely horrendous".

    "Our biggest trouble has actually been getting to the sites on the public roads," he said.

    The amber weather warning for snow came in force across much of South Yorkshire, West Yorkshire, Greater Manchester and parts of Derbyshire at 03:00 GMT on Tuesday, and will last until the afternoon.

    Councils are also warning of disruption to bin collections and the closure of waste disposal centres.
